In 2018 3M agreed to pay the U.S. Government $9.1 million in a False Claims Act lawsuit for knowingly supplying the military with defective earplugs.
From 2003 through 2015, 3M made and sold dual-ended earplugs to the U.S. military for hearing protection from close range firearms and other loud noises. But due to their faulty design, the earplugs can come loose from the ear canal just enough for loud sounds to cause hearing damage. 3M allegedly knew of this defect but sold them to the U.S. military anyway.
Injuries to military service members and combat veterans include: ringing in the ears (tinnitus), permanent hearing loss, and even deafness.
